The district Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is situated in the middle of Berlin and emerged from the fusion of Friedrichshain, which was former eastern city and Kreuzberg, which was former western city. Today the biggest part of old buildings is sanified and the district stands in gentrification process. The previous unequal districts which are separated by river Spree and only connected by the bridge Oberbaumbrücke converged in the last few years.

On Friedrichshain-site around Simon-Dach-Straße the area developed with bars, restaurants, small shops and boutiques into a popular place, especially for young people.
Kreuzberg owes its nationalwide reputation to agitating history of the smaller eastern area called SO 36, which was the centre of illegal and alternative squatter scene in the 70's and 80's.
Since 1987 the 1st May demonstration is an annual ritual. Today SO 36 is a social focus with a high rate of foreigners and unemployment. Nevertheless Kreuzberg is a good place for activities with its bars and pubs around Oranienstraße, Wiener Straße and Schlesisches Tor. This area is called Wrangelkiez and there are a lot of students living.

Bergmannstraße is also a popular place for strolling around due to its cafés, restaurants, small shops and rummage&second hand stores. At Marheinekeplatz you will find one of Berlin´s last market halls called Marheinekehalle.
Every year in June a special event takes place: The Bergmannstraßenfest “Kreuzberg jazzt!”. Almost 300.000 people visit this event. More than 50 bands perform on several stages. At the same time an other festival, called “Kreuzberg-Kocht”, takes place, which is one of the most important feast in this district.
